BALLAD OF MIND LIBERATION
translated by YK Kwan
Up from the East Sea the sun gets,
Over the western hills it sets.
Pining the whole day or laughing away,
It’s still the same day.
Don’t view matters with tunnel vision,
Body at ease, mind in relaxation.
Old-age pension you get,
More the merrier; if less, don’t fret.
In your daily meals, more veg and less meat,
Enjoy them the same, coarse or neat.
Not be picky with clothes, old or new,
So long as they keep you from the chill.
With some close friends you chat along,
On old stories or new as you want.
Caring for your grandchildren is a joy,
Don’t mind if it is a girl or a boy.
Full support in a family young and old,
No matter poor or richly respectable.
Morning or eve, work your body right,
Busy or not, always look bright.
Cherish body and soul, grow old in grace,
Though a mortal, yet as if in an immortal place.
